Strømgren’s sometimes ingenious, sometimes laconic understatements give The Outskirts a poetic edge that verges between laughter and tears. The Outskirts is a harmonious production at the intersection between dance and theatre.
Dansverk av Jo Strømgren
"Strømgrens Utkanten är det bästa han har fått ur sin geniala hjärna" nummer.se
This performance is an adaptation of Jo Strømgren’s stage play Placebo from 1999 and the last in a series of productions to employ glimpses into private rooms and documentary use of video film as its central concept. However, after Big Brother had shocked Sweden in 2000 and then Norway in 2001, and the reality element subsequently became a trend within both dance and theatre, he chose to explore opposite concept directions, including abstract language and creating fictional universes. The Outskirts is thus an encounter with Strømgren’s artistic past, and yet a completely fresh work with new content.
The Outskirts explores the grey area between confidence and doubt – where the safety of conformity has just begun to break apart to and reveal the unspoken fear of the abnormal – where we laugh loudly and mechanically and avert our gaze.
