Matthew Rose

British bass Matthew Rose at the Curtis Institute of Music before becoming a member of the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

For the Royal Opera his roles have included Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea), Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Colline (La bohème), Masetto (Don Giovanni), and Haraschta (The Cunning Little Vixen). In 2006 he made an acclaimed debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Bottom – for which he received the John Christie Award – and he has since returned to the Festival as Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) and Mr Flint (Billy Budd). Other appearances include Bottom at La Scala, Milan, the Opéra National de Lyon and the Houston Grand Opera. He has also sung Leporello (Don Giovanni) in Santa Fe; Collatinus (The Rape of Lucretia) at the Teatro Réal in Madrid; Speaker (The Magic Flute) and Colline at the English National Opera and Mozart’s Figaro for the Welsh National Opera and in Lille.

His forthcoming engagements include Leporello (Don Giovanni) at the Glyndebourne Festival; Mozart’s Figaro at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; Masetto at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Houston and his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

In concert, he has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival, the BBC Proms and at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. Recent engagements have included the LSO with Sir Colin Davis, Harding and Tilson Thomas; the Dresden Staatskapelle, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Philharmonia Orchestra with Mackerras; the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Dudamel; the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner; the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich with Dutoit and the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Belohlávek and Minkowski.

His recital appearances include the Chester and Cheltenham International Festivals, St John’s Smith Square and the Wigmore Hall.

His recordings include Der Steuermann (Tristan und Isolde) with Pappano; Ratcliffe (Billy Budd) with Harding; Bel Canto arias with Natalie Dessay and Evelino Pido and Handel’s ‘Messiah’ with Stephen Cleobury and the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge for EMI; Tippett's ‘A Child of our Time’ and Berlioz’s ‘L’enfance du Christ’ with Sir Colin Davis for LSO Live and Liszt Lieder with Iain Burnside for Signum.

He is the recipient of the Independent Opera / Wigmore Hall Fellowship.
